For all Arabic-language enthusiasts, the Arabic Language Academy (ALA) in Sharjah has a pavilion dedicated to the history of the language at the Sharjah International Book Fair. Head over to their pavilion this weekend, and learn about the historical development of one the world’s richest and most celebrated languages.

Visitors to the pavilion can get an introduction to the Arabic language from the UAE’s leading linguistic experts. They can also browse through their flagship project – the Historical Corpus of the Arabic Language that was recently launched by His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah.

This eight-volume masterpiece is an unprecedented and monumental achievement for the Arab world and has made history in the field of language studies as it is the most comprehensive compilation that chronicles the history of the Arabic language over seventeen centuries. The volumes explore in detail the evolution of Arabic through five distinct eras, including the pre-Islamic period (before 622 CE), the Islamic era (622–749 CE), the Abbasid period (750–1258), the development of nation-states (1259–1798), and the modern period (1799–present).
