The Poetry Encyclopedia is a new initiative by the Department of Culture and Tourism in Abu Dhabi offering a wide collection of Arabic poetry, online, from pre-Islamic to present times.
Recently approved by Sheikh Khalid bin Mohamed bin Zayed, the Chairman of Abu Dhabi Executive Office, the encyclopedia is the largest and most comprehensive multimedia database of Arabic poetry in the world providing access to thousands of poems in text and audio format by poets across the world.
The encyclopedia is in Arabic only and includes dictionaries and other books on the Arabic language and literature, while featuring extracts that are translated into other languages.
Part of the initiative is a number of other related activities, including competitions in cultural studies, poetry recitation, calligraphy and more, with an upcoming exhibition narrating the story of Arabic poetry and Sheikh Zayed’s association within the Emirati culture.
The Poetry Encyclopedia is the result of more than 20 years of research, documentation and electronic reproduction of poetry and literature by numerous researches, expert and advisory committees.
