Written by Therese Hasberg Avril, illustrated by Wael Almrawed
The Camel’s Dubai Adventure tells the story of a camel who dreams of flying and a group of five friends that helps him follow his dream. Their adventure takes them across Dubai, from the deserts to the cityscape – the various sites serving as a fond memory of growing up in Dubai.
About the book, Therese adds: “I have always loved books, but when bringing up my children in Dubai, I found there was a gap in the market for books that I could read to my children about Dubai, a book I could gift children who were leaving Dubai, a book I could read to the children I was teaching about the place in which they were living. It was my dream to write a book that could function on several levels -aimed at young children by focusing on the narrative, at older children by focusing on rhyme, at teaching about Dubai’s infrastructure, history, demography, among others. It is my wish that this book be used in various ways- for education, for bedtime reading, and finally, as a fond memory of a childhood in Dubai."
Therese Hasberg Avril lived and worked in Dubai from 2004—2017 as a teacher of English and Special Needs in High School. She worked at the Emirates International School Meadows, then as a nursery teacher and later as Head Teacher/Principal. Together with a friend, she established Dubai's first Danish School, which became the largest Danish school in the world, outside of Denmark. After working there for over ten years, in 2017, she relocated back to Copenhagen, Denmark, her home country. She currently lives there with her husband and two sons, for whom she first wrote this book.
