This is a refreshing approach to learning Arabic, which has been developed by John Kirkbright over the years of teaching Arabic to students of various nationalities. It aims to lead beginners step-by-step to the point where they are able to hold conversations in Arabic with nationals from the Gulf and Saudi Arabia.
The two comprehensive course books, with detailed explanatory notes and plenty of exercises, are accompanied by three sixty-minute CDs.
Although Spoken Arabic was written for self-study, several companies and banks have asked the author to teach the course as a means of completing it within a specified time frame. These include the Al Futtaim Group, Emaar, Shell, ABN-AMRO, Emirates Bank, Mashreq Bank and the National Bank of Qatar.
John Kirkbright first started the study of Arabic as part of a BA Honours Course at Durham University, graduating in 1961. Since then, he has taught Arabic and other languages to a variety of students from diverse parts of the globe, besides being involved in business and banking. He has an MA in Linguistics and English Language Teaching from Leeds University (1974) and has written on Arab dialects. He is an Associate of the Institute of Linguists, UK and a member of the British Association of Applied Linguistics. He has lived in the Arab world for more than forty years, of which the last thirty have been in the Arabian Gulf.
