Those Were the Days: Journals of Dubai is a unique testament to an era that has passed and will never be seen again. Eighteen Dubai veterans tell their stories, illustrating their personal journeys with poignant memories, entertaining anecdotes and photographs from collections never seen before. Shahnaz Pakravan has gathered a diverse group of people and skilfully woven together their experiences, to form a fascinating and very personal album.
Born to Iranian parents and with an ancestry that has included pearl merchants and traders, Shahnaz Pakravan grew up in the Gulf. Her formal education began in Iran and then in Pakistan where her mother, Mariam Behnam, was posted as a diplomat. Pakravan came back to Dubai in 1980 to be re-united with her family who'd been forced to flee the Revolution in Iran. From early beginnings with Dubai TV's Channel 33, she went on to pursue a career in broadcasting in Britain. Shahnaz's break in mainstream television finally came as a presenter on the BBC programme Tomorrow's World. She juggled her career with her role as mother to two daughters. In the late 90s, Dubai once again beckoned and she returned with her family. She continues her involvement with various television networks and runs her own production company, producing films and live events.
