This colourful book evokes the appeal of the Emirate of Sharjah, with its contrasting coasts facing the Arabian Gulf and the Indian Ocean. It describes the people, their way of life, culture and history, also giving an account of the modern development of the emirate, and why it has become known as the 'Cultural Capital of the Arab World'.
Shirley Kay first came to the Middle East in 1965 with her husband, the former British Consul General in Dubai. They came back to live in the UAE from 1985 to 1990, and now make frequent return visits for both work and pleasure. Shirley Kay has studied languages at Cambridge University, Arabic at Shemlan in the Lebanon and Middle Eastern archaeology at the Institute of Archaeology in London. She has authored several books on Middle Eastern countries, and has also made around thirty documentary films of the area for Dubai TV.
