The Pope and the Grand Imam: A Thorny Path sheds light on the various stages of the Human Fraternity Document creation until it was signed on February 4th, 2019, in Abu Dhabi. A journey that started with the Grand Imam’s visit to the Vatican, and then the Pope Francis’s visit to Al-Azhar, after which the fraternal relationship between the two leaders grew further through the continuous meetings they had together. It was during one of these joint meetings that the idea of the human fraternity was born. The author delves into his account of the important milestones passed during the preparations for the Document and the historic visit of the two religious leaders to the UAE to announce it and explains the historic role of the UAE in supporting the Document until it was eventually presented on February 4th, in a manner that has impressed the whole world.
Mohammad Abdulsalam is a graduate of Al-Azhar University. He holds an MA in Public Law compared with Islamic Sharia. He is also a Judge at the Egyptian Council of State and worked as a former legal advisor to His Eminence Prof. Ahmed At-Tayyeb, the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, for more than 9 years. He participated in revising the Egyptian Constitution and took part in drafting Al-Azhar Documents in the period between 2011 and 2018.
