Mother without a Mask is the story of the meeting and subsequent friendship between the author and the family of a Gulf sheikh. As the author sits with the women of the household, listening to and observing the traditions governing their daily lives, her relationship with them grows to transcend the barriers of language and culture. This book provides an empathetic view of Arab culture through a Westerner's eyes, revealing an intimate portrait of family life in a changing world.
Patricia Holton born in Westchester County, New York, and educated at the Madeira School in Virginia and Sarah Lawrence College. She married a Cornishman and they established a business in South Wales, where they had three children. As their work expanded throughout Britain, they moved to London, retaining their links with both Wales and Cornwall.
Through a series of unforeseen circumstances, they found themselves travelling to and working in the Arab world. Patricia has travelled extensively in the Middle East; she knew the Lebanon before it was torn apart by war and subsequently rebuilt. She has made frequent visits to Egypt, Libya and Oman, but her greatest love is Al Ain in the United Arab Emirates, the setting for this book.
