Wilfred Thesiger in Africa has a unique collection of essays to accompany Wilfred Thesiger's own personal photographs of the Africa he experienced as one of the world's last great gentleman travellers, a pioneer of twentieth-century exploration, and a world-renowned photographer.

The book is published to coincide with the centenary of Wilfred Thesiger's birth in Ethiopia in 1910 and a major new exhibition at the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford. It is also a moving celebration of Thesiger's enduring relationship with the continent, and his fascination with its peoples and landscapes. Containing around 200 of Thesiger's beautiful photographs, most of them previously unpublished, the essays in this volume explore and evaluate his lifetime of exploration and travel throughout Africa, as well as, for the first time, his photographic archive and its legacy as a museum collection.

About the Author

Christopher Morton is Curator of Photographs at the Pitt Rivers Museum, University of Oxford. He has researched and published on the history of photography and anthropology in Africa, in particular the work of Sir Edward Evans Pritchard, and is co-editor (with Elizabeth Edwards) of the book Photography, Anthropology and History: Expanding the Frame (2009).

Philip N. Grover has held research fellowships at St Annie's College, Oxford, and the Institute of Historical Research, London, and is now based at the Pitt Rivers Museum, University of Oxford. He is an authority on the photographs of Wilfred Thesiger and co-curated the last major exhibition of his work, Wilfred Thesiger's Iraq 1949 – 1958: Photographs of Travel.
