From Pearls to Oil is a testament of the challenges contended by extraordinary men who initiated the search for oil in the UAE, in the years between the two World Wars. The book features never-before-published copies of letters, notes and reports from the archives of the Abu Dhabi Petroleum Company (ADPC) and other literature recorded by British Government officials. With rare photographs, maps and diagrams alongside the in-depth narrative, this book is a great resource for scholars, residents and visitors interested in the history of this land.
David Heard CBE came to Abu Dhabi in 1963 to join a small team bringing on-stream new oil wells in the desert. Along with his wife, Dr Frauke Heard-Bey, he witnessed the establishment of the UAE federal state and over the years, they have enjoyed the friendship of many of its citizens. On many occasions they met the first President of the UAE, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, and his brother, Sheikh Shakhbut. They now live in retirement in Abu Dhabi. David is a member of the Travellers Club, the Chatham House and the Royal Society for Asian Affairs. He is also a Fellow of the Energy Institute.
