Fujairah is one of the most beautiful and interesting of the seven Emirates that make up the UAE and boasts the best scenery in the country. It is a land of long sandy beaches washed by the warm waters of the Indian Ocean and deep, fertile valleys cutting through the towering Hajar Mountains – a natural beauty spot and a holiday destination without parallel. This book provides a colourful portrayal of a prosperous emirate, its history and heritage, its rapidly growing economy and, above all, the friendliness of its people for which it is justly renowned.
Peter Hellyer first came to the UAE as a documentary filmmaker in 1975, staying on to fill a number of posts in the Government communications departments, and was managing editor of the daily Emirates News. During the past years he spent considerable amount of time pursuing, and writing about, his interests in local bird-life, archaeology and in the heritage and history of the people of the UAE. He was former chairman of the Emirates Natural History Group. He has authored numerous articles on the country's heritage, history and wildlife, as well as several Government year books; he also co-authored Abu Dhabi: Garden City of the Gulf and Al Ain: Oasis City.
