Wilfred Thesiger, the great explorer-adventurer and author of Arabian Sands and The Marsh Arabs, became a legend in his own lifetime, but his character and motivations have remained an intriguing enigma. This authorised biography, written with Thesiger's support before his death in 2003, includes unique access to the rich Thesiger archive, such as vivid, intimate family correspondence, and his own letters, diaries and notebooks. The book recounts Thesiger's family influences, his wartime experiences, his philosophy as a hunter and conservationist, his writing and photography and his friendships with Arabs and Africans among whom he lived.
Alexander Maitland was a close friend of Thesiger for forty years. He edited Thesiger's anthology, My Life and Travels, and worked with him on many of his other titles, including My Kenya Days, The Danakil Diary, Among the Mountains and A Vanished World. He is the author of Speke and the Discovery of the Source of the Nile, A Tower in a Wall (conversations with Freya Stark) and a biography, Robert and Gabriela Cunninghame Graham. The Highland Year, set in Perthshire, and Wild Thyme and Saladelle, about the Camargue, are illustrated with his drawings and watercolours. He worked with Freya Stark on Rivers of Time, a book of her photographs.
