Few foreigners have won the late Sheikh Zayed's friendship, and even fewer knew and could talk about Sheikh Zayed the way Edward Henderson did. Arabian Destiny is a very personal account of Henderson's life, and reveals a talented and sensitive individual with the stature of a statesman. Through his book, he expresses a unique understanding of and love for the UAE, and provides valuable insights in to the fabric of UAE society and its recent, eventful past.
Edward Henderson's life had been inextricably linked to the UAE's history. He arrived in the then Trucial States in 1948 as an oil company representative, and joined in the search and discovery of several vast oilfields. In 1956, he entered the British Foreign Service and became the Political Officer to Abu Dhabi in 1959. Subsequently, he was appointed to Jerusalem and Bahrain, and ended his career in the service as the first British Ambassador to the newly independent Qatar. After retirement, he returned to Abu Dhabi to work for the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. From 1976 until his death in 1995, he was a member of the Centre for Documentation and Research in Abu Dhabi.
