Abu Dhabi: Life and Times is a unique pictorial account that encapsulates the emirate's cultural heritage and swift progress. Taken with enviable informality, Noor Ali's photographs give an eyewitness account of the changes experienced in Abu Dhabi. From the outset, the book fondly portrays times past, of the Bedu and the gradual impact of modern influences triggered by the discovery of oil. It explores the prelude to Abu Dhabi's development, the building of its infrastructure and the significant role played by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan in shaping a nation. His preparation of the emirate, its progress and innovation, and the new generation of leaders are reviewed. Finally, a series of aerial photographs of Abu Dhabi spanning a period of thirty years vividly illustrate the pace of the city's development.
Noor Ali Rashid's unique collection of photographs spans half a century and earned him the title of "Royal Photographer". Since pre-Federation days, Noor Ali Rashid was the official photographer to the rulers of the Trucial States, which later merged to form the United Arab Emirates. He was often called upon to take pictures of state ceremonies as well as formal and informal portraits of the rulers and their families, and has also taken historic images during official visits of foreign dignitaries to the UAE and during rulers' visits overseas.
